On our latest segment of Artist to Watch, we get to feature Mavitu_ke one of the members of 420 Psychos_254 and a laid-back guy. We also get to know about his music journey and talk about his latest single ‘Baba Yao’ featuring Chrispo Davis. We caught up with him via text and here’s what had to say about himself.
How would you describe your music?
A different type of rehab I call it, is Bold, free-flowing creative rap. Driven by my desire to always stand out.
What is your main inspiration for music?
Fear Not being able to live up to my full potential, I believe I have a lot in me that’s yet to be unlocked, the fear of never reaching the deep end makes me dig a little deeper each time I want to be the best.
What do you enjoy most being a musician?
Connecting with people through something so close to your soul is one of the greatest things you can experience
Looking into a strangers’ eyes and knowing that he/she is really hearing what I’m saying, that he/she suddenly is struck with the knowledge that they are not alone in their experience of joy or suffering; basically, when the crowd and I are totally vibrating on the same frequency. It’s as close to levitating as a human being could feel.
Describe your creative process?
Calmness, peace, quiet
I write best at night
How do you balance between the music and the other obligations-school, family, etc.?
Music is part of me, I live I breathe music, I sleep, wake up to music Its always easy finding time for what you Love
What does your typical day look like?
I spend a lot of my time in the Studio
Having a day out with friends too sure makes it for me
You recently released ‘BABA YAO’ ft Chrispo, Tell us how you came about the song?
Actually, it was my first time meeting Chrispo Davis, way way back before we did our first piece #Blessings, Wow what a guy.
He was actually miles ahead in terms of what he had created and Baba Yao came bout me trying or rather showing I can fit in perfectly in what seemed like the next stage in my development as an artist, n yeah it was a step in the right direction.
This is your first single. Why this song?
It shows what I’m really bout, my style n how I go about making it different.
Has your music journey had a deliberate direction or did it simply gradually evolve in whatever direction it found?
I am at a better place than I was when it all started, so yeah I can see the progress I’ve made over the course, not just me as an artist but also in what I’m tryna achieve.
You recently participated in the Odinare challenge by Khaligraph Jones. Tell us how that’s going on for you? Do you feel like you’ll win?
Ummm it’s a great opportunity presented by the O.G to help us young artists believe we are not far from making it all happen, n participating in the challenge alone is a win for me
We fight to win, it would be optimistic of me though
I believe I rank among the best
If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?
What would you do if the audience looks bored during your performance?
It can never get bored with me
What changes would you like to see to the music industry to allow you to make a living from your music?
Foundations to be laid that specifically deals with artists, looking after every artist’s interests n help in growing and making the music industry a lot more inclusive as much as what artists get.
How do you feel about the internet in the music business?
It is the way forward
What is one message that you would like to give to your fans?
Am thankful for everyone who believed from the first day, the journey has just begun. I’m working to give back the best nothing but the best
Lastly what are your plans for the future?
I want to establish myself in the industry, it is the climb in my journey.
